TAAF Statement on the Stop CCP Visas Act

TAAF strongly condemns the recently introduced Stop Chinese Communist Prying by Vindicating Intellectual Safeguards in Academia Act (Stop CCP Visas Act), which would indiscriminately ban all Chinese student visas.

This blatant, nationality and race based prejudicial legislation echoes the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, which barred Chinese laborers from entering the US and denied citizenship to those already here. The Chinese Exclusion Act, the first major law to restrict immigration based on a nationality, was wrong then and it’s wrong now. Repeating this mistake would not only violate American values of fairness and opportunity but also weaken America’s ability to foster innovation and diplomacy.

The real-world consequences of xenophobic policies are immediate and dangerous. Legislation like this fuels racial profiling, anti-Asian discrimination, and targeting of Asian and Asian American students, who are rightfully studying on campuses today.

TAAF urges educational institutions, policymakers, and community leaders to remain vigilant in ensuring that students of Asian descent are safe and free to learn without fear.

We must learn from our past, and not repeat it. TAAF invites all to work together to build an America where safety, belonging, and prosperity are available to all.
