TAAF Statement on Racist Graffiti in San Francisco

TAAF is disturbed by the racist graffiti recently found near San Francisco’s Japantown, which used a hateful slur and called for the death of people of Chinese descent. This incident is a painful reminder that our communities still face the weight of anti-Asian sentiment in our daily lives, and that rising xenophobia fueled in part by anti-Chinese rhetoric threatens our collective safety in public spaces.

According to FBI data, vandalism and property damage accounted for a significant share of hate motivated offenses against Asian Americans in the last five years, ranking third only after intimidation and simple assault. TAAF’s 2025 STAATUS Index also found 63% of Asian Americans report feeling unsafe in day-to-day spaces and fear they will be victims of discrimination in the next five years. We believe that all Americans have the right to feel safe in their neighborhoods which is why we remain committed to strengthening our National Safety Network, with San Francisco and Oakland being key cities where investments are being made.
