TAAF Statement on Layoffs Impacting NBC Asian America

We are heartbroken by NBC News’ reported move to dissolve the dedicated team at NBC Asian America, one of the nation’s most trusted sources for news about AAPI communities. Since 2014, NBC Asian America’s reporters and editors have set the gold standard for thoughtful, in-depth coverage of AAPI identity, culture, and belonging. Their features also helped to elevate our voices, spotlight AAPI issues that are too often overlooked, educate others about AAPI culture and identity, and called attention to the rise in anti-Asian incidents during the pandemic that led to TAAF’s founding.

Our work would not be possible without the commitment of journalists who bring our stories into America’s homes every day, and we extend our thoughts to all those impacted by this week’s layoffs. At a time when we urgently need more coverage of AAPI communities, news organizations and decision-makers must invest in journalists and platforms who are ready to tell our stories with the depth, cultural sensitivity, and care they deserve.
