TAAF Condemns Xenophobic, Islamophobic Attacks Against Zohran Mamdani
TAAF strongly condemns the xenophobic and Islamophobic attacks directed at New York State Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani following his historic win in the NYC Democratic mayoral primary. A South Asian and Muslim immigrant, Mamdani has faced death threats from the public and hateful rhetoric, including from elected officials, that questions his loyalty, invokes terrorism, and calls for his U.S. citizenship to be revoked.
South Asian and Muslim American communities have long been the targets of bigotry and discrimination, which intensified in the aftermath of 9/11 and continues to this day. TAAF rejects the normalization of harassment and discrimination directed towards any individuals or communities. We have seen time and time again that words can lead to real world consequences. When our leaders are risking their lives to serve, we hold our public figures with large platforms to a higher standard, expecting them to model the type of behaviors and language that our citizens should mirror.
With anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiments on the rise, we must unite to ensure that all Americans, regardless of their faith or background, feel they can belong and live their lives with safety and dignity.
